This is something rather prevalent in our society, and I’m speaking within the Malaysian context – prejudices. Since the definition is extremely sweeping, let me just scope it into preconceived preferences or ideas.
Noted that it is one’s own choice to favor something or someone as against others but what I cannot comprehend is actually the need to exaggerate. Worse if it is a reversed discrimination, I actually do not have a better word or term for this behaviour.
Scenario: A malay person who goes out of his/her way to prove that he/she is very ‘worldly, unconventional, open-minded’ by putting down his/her own roots i.e. being a malay! It goes to the point that he/she would denounce the malay customs and started acting like…oh so hip!
Maybe I’m way too old for this.
The scene continues: A malay lady asked me to join the after office happy hour down at the pub. When I refused, she started making comments like “Pleaselah don’t give me this melayu tak boleh minum crap”. Excuse me – that is definitely not crappy at all.
Another scene: When asked to join for lunch, a Malay man refused on grounds “Why the malays got to eat together?”. That’s another excuse me – I was just asking in random, please don’t think too much of the invitation.
Or maybe, its just the Merdeka month that makes me so patriotic this month….whatever….

really funny. every worldly, unconventional, open-minded malay is only one generation removed from the kampung, mandi sungai and panjat pokok manggis (ambik buah lor, bukan sleep there one!!!).
melayu tak minum? ayoyi, there are many places in kl where melayu are the kings of the botol. well, they never asked me for money to buy liquor so it is perfectly ok with me. as a matter of fact some of them buy me drinks too and they are good friends of mine....
i usually have lunch with people whom i enjoy having lunch with and it does not matter if they are malay, chinese, indian or green in colour.

~~ unwise remarks about malay n drinking.. for crying out loud..hayyo konon i'm hipla tu,look at me i'm drinking. respect others plz ~~

lolita, many malays drink. make no mistake about that. you go to many places in kl, they drink. try hard rock cafe, don't be surprised. it is not a sensitive issue, it is common. malays from the lowest to the highest ranking drinks. some said pergi oversea kena drink. ayoyi, mana ada la.
orang melayu ramai kaki botol lorrrrr....

Point noted Dudae. I'm not judging malays who drink. But when they judge me for not..then it gets to me. And when they blame me for 'being malay'..then it gets to me more.
They can accept a non-drinking mat salehs but they become more critical of non-drinking malays...weird, huh?
