Mirror...Mirror on the Wall

So Zahid won the second season of Akademi Fantasia.

Expected. Judging from his huge scores of supporters in the stadium. It was obvious that he was pretty confident as well. The only moments of doubt came only when Kudsia cried after Bob’s performance and stated that “you voice is so pure..”.

Results are out and all we can do is wait for the 3rd season next year. The only question remains in my head is the fact that we are all judgmental when it comes to looks. The only distinction is the variance of the feeling – a little to downright extremely ‘into looks’ approach.

There’s a new English proverb – the saying that beauty is only skin-deep is nothing more but a skin-deep saying.

A friend of mine mentioned that the speed of light far exceeds anything else. That’s his reason why looks are important. Fundamentally people are taken by first impression, then depending on how the impression leads them.

There are so many articles written on how far your looks can take you, the same goes to so many documentaries on searching for the perfect looks. We know that the best looking has to have the most asymmetrical features. Basically, photostat your close-up photo, fold it in the middle and check if your right eye falls nicely onto your left eye and your nose and mouth fits perfectly between the left and the right. Or the Malays will put it as ‘hidung mancung bak …oh my..sorry..really cannot remember..but you know how it goes..’

Went shopping yesterday at KLCC when went straight to the ‘bigger’ women’s section of Isetan. Husband loitered around and all the sudden, he came to me laughing and pointing at the mannequin.

“I was thinking to myself, what’s wrong with these mannequins, then I realized that these are ‘fat’ ones..hahahahahahaha”

5 seconds later, he was following my behind and asking me what was wrong. Duh?

My point is, we have driven obsession with beauty. We judge people and we are being judged.

Its just that, it doesn’t feel so good if you are the receiving end of the verdict!
